El Jahanamiya

“Crazy they call her rightfully so
Like wildfire she spreads
She has something to show
No matter the conditions
Nothing should stop you to grow”
Bougainvillea plant, in Arabic also known as the “Jahanamiya”, which translates to hellish and diabolical or another name “El Majnoona” which means crazy in Arabic. So how did this family of vines earn such a mischievous title?
Living in Dubai, it’s not surprising to start seeing flowers wilt by the start of June. When the scorching gusts of summer start to blow, the flowers we know melt like snow. Jasmines start to fade, roses bow to the burning crusade. It takes a fighter to bloom all year long and that’s what the “Jahamiya” does. Unlike many plants, she can thrive through the heat waves, the humidity, and the driest climates.
Not picky at all about the sand or the nutritions other plants may demand. She is built to bloom and she does it exceptionally. Provided the right care this plant gives back like no other an explosion of vibrant colors. In terms of size and growth, she deserves a medal. She will put on a show making you believe that her leaves are petals. If you look closer her tricks start getting revealed, her tiny white flowers are contained within these colorful leaves. Those special leaves are called bracts and they don’t discriminate. Celebrating their many colors they will germinate. It’s not about what you take from this world rather what you make.
Through this piece, I learned that no matter the condition nothing should stop you to thrive. Don’t look for more resources to be successful rather work with what you’ve got. you don’t need a lot of rain to bloom, accept the spontaneity of life and work towards what creates meaning.
Be colorful outside and white on the inside, your true essence is valuable so realize the impact it holds. Celebrate people from all sorts of backgrounds, in the terms of the “Majnoona.” No matter the bracket we all have that white flower inside, not many will realize our true abilities. If you don’t see a way then craft away. Be like the “Jahanamiya” she never complained that it’s too hot!
